Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpecker

I guess it's been awhile since I've updated this blog! I was excited to see this new visitor to my feeder and turns out he's now become a regular! I decided to sign up for Project Feederwatch and last week was my first week counting. I suspect my count will be pretty much the same everytime because lately I have the same visitors everyday. 6 House Finches, roughly 6 Juncos(maybe more), 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 2 Flickers and 1 Downy Woodpecker. On rare occasions I see a Red-breasted Nuthatch but not often.

  1. I do care! I think your bird-blog is a lot of fun & you have not only great birds but great pix too! Thank you for taking the time to update with your new visitor! Woodpeckers are some of my favorite birds but don't get them often (if ever...grrr!). So I really enjoyed this post. I've done PFW for 4 yrs now & each year my birds have declined in numbers & species. But, I keep at it in hopes that something new may just show up!

  2. Thanks!I'm thrilled you enjoy my photos! I sure enjoy taking them and wish I had even more new birds to photograph. Hopefully your count will start to increase in #'s. I'll have to see what mine do over the next few years.

  4. Sorry...here's what I meant to say!...

Since moving to our area (almost 7yrs ago) there has been an obnoxious amount of building which, I'm sure, has everything to do with my decline in birds. Very sad.

I hope you enjoy PFW this season. I've enjoyed each season very much as well as the email group. I always learn something! If you're interested, there's also the GBBC (Great Backyard Bird Count) February 12-15.

Looking forward to what may show up in your yard next!

  5. Thanks for the reminder about the GBBC! It's getting close. I will participate in that for sure. That is so sad that all the building is forcing the birds out of your area:( I live fairly close to a greenbelt with a nice pond, river and lots of trees all around my neighborhood so I'm lucky! If it weren't for my neighbor's darn outdoor cat that stalks my yard, it would be perfect!I hope to do some bird-friendly landscaping over time to increase the variety in my yard!

  6. Funny you mention your neighbor's cat. I am a cat lover to the core...enough to know that for the cats safety as well as the saftey of wildlife, cats must and should ALWAYS be kept indoors! I also have "that neighbor" too...grrr! I wish nothing bad on the cats themselves, they are doing what they've been doing for 1,000's of years...it's the owners that need a good talking to! But your area sure sounds pretty fantastic! I'm sure your landscaping projects will do a lot to attract new birds. Folks on the PFW discussion group are always chatting about their plantings etc. We have a pretty small yard with limited space for plants & trees. But at least our neighborhood is mature so we do get a few staple visitors (mostly house sparrows and house finches). And I do have hummers year round which I love!

  7. I think this cat sort of fell into the care of my neighbor and I've never gotten the feeling that she really loves this cat like a pet. If she did she wouldn't let it out with the all the dangers that could fall upon her. As for the PFW forums, I recently discovered them and love all the good stuff posted!
I was considering a hummingbird feeders but it seems very high maintenance so I'm not sure I'll go there. I would love to photograph one :)

  8. Poor cat...so sad how people feel that animals are just disposable like that...makes me both sad and angry.

You were mentioning doing some plantings for the birds...throw in a "hummingbird approved" flowering plant and then you won't have to deal with the maintenance of the sugar-water feeders! ;)
